On October 6, 2023, Hartford Public Schools high school students and their counselors had the pleasure of attending the NAACP’s The Great Debate between Yale University and Howard University.
The students were able to listen to two great teams debate the following issues:
- Discontinuing Teacher Certification Exams
- AI in the Music Industry
Howard University squared off against Yale University, and it was obvious that Howard was a fan favorite.
Weaver High School College Career Specialist, LaReese Cooper (pictured above with her Weaver Beavers) recalls, "You could literally feel the energy in the arena. The students were so engaged and were cheering for the young adults who displayed their great debating skills. It was also awesome to witness students clapping for young adults who looked like them. It was truly an unforgettable experience. "
School Counselor, Amy Boutilier from Kinsella Magnet High School of Performing Arts (pictured below with her Kinsella students) reflects, "The whole vibe of the event was extremely positive and empowering. The CTNAACP put on an amazing event, with organization like none other. They got thousands of students through security and into their seats in record time. Special thank you to Mr. Rogers, Ms. Janette, and Mr. Fields for chaperoning. A huge thank you to all the covering teachers today that did not get to go on the field trip, but held it down at school. We appreciate you! Thank you to our administration for allowing us to go! "
Hartford Public Schools sends special thanks to the NAACP for creating this meaningful opportunity for our high school students.
